Coefficient Media Podcast - Episode #4 - New Years Show 2008-2009

At Coefficient Media, we pride ourselves with staying current with technology trends and implementing the best features of those for our clients.  With that responsibility comes a lot of research and testing.  We put ourselves through countless hours or surfing the web, testing gadgets and experimenting with online social networks.  It's a dangerous business but someone has to do it.

After reviewing all of the trends and innovations of 2008. we have created a list of what we believe were some of the most notable developments of the year.  Enjoy the video and let us know what you think.

For those of you playing at home, here is the full list of our 2008 review and 2009 predictions.

2008

  • The introduction of true smart phones and mobile devices (iPhone, G1, Blackberry Storm, and similar smart phones) and netbooks introduce functional mobile/cloud computing.
  • Traditional media feels impact of decreased viewers.  Newspapers start to fold and TV networks move to cheaper programming like reality shows and late night talk shows.
  • Online video becomes popular.  Youtube becomes the #2 search engine second to Google (the company that also owns youtube).
  • Politics takes to the internet and uses it effectively for more than just raising money.

Gadgets of 2008:

  • iPhone 3G with the App Store
  • TiVo and other DVR's (Digital Video Recorders)

Business in 2008:

  • Blogging
  • Testing of Social Networks

Flops of 2008:

  • Amazon Kindle
  • Virtual reality worlds Google Lively, Second Life and others with the exception of WOW (World of Warcraft)

2009

  • Analog TV turns digital… Not so fun for some. Media center takes over (apple tv, xbox, ps3, smart TV's)
  • Social media will become overwhelming and cause an information overload thus legitimizing the need for social content filters like digg that give customized recommendations.  Niche content will find a way to reach their audience.
  • Notebook computer sales will slow as we see more people buy a combination of cheaper desktops and more powerful mobile devices.
  • Mobile devices combined with GPS and a constant connection to the internet bring the realization of “Mobile Social Software”

Business in 2009:

  • Cloud computing and virtualization.
  • Social Media condescend and made measurable for business.
  • Businesses produce their own media content for the web and other outlets rather than rely on traditional marketing (newspaper, billboard) to get more bang for their buck.

Gadgets of 2009:

  • Netbooks
  • 3D GPS

Flops of 2009:

  • Point and shoot digital cameras
  • Satellite Radio
